FAQ's ABOUT PAIN

Is SW Pain Center an addiction, SUD, or methadone clinic?

No, it is imperative and crucial that patients are forthcoming and honest during the intake process and when discussing with any of our providers when dealing with a history of illicit/prescribed substance abuse, addiction, (SUD) substance use disorder, or history of overdoses due to genuine implications on a patient's health.

While there is a phenomenon of patient WIB (Withholding Information Behavior) due to embarrassment, fear of being judged by clinicians, medication changes, etc... Our Providers will guide and refer patients to a specialty that could better treat and provide the help needed to improve patients' health and safety.

Southwest Pain Center is committed to providing our patients with the utmost regard, respect, and safest care.

Is there any medication that can help my condition?

Medications are available for the treatment of chronic pain syndromes. However, not all chronic pain syndromes respond to medication therapy. For this reason, it is essential to discuss all potential treatment options with a qualified medical practitioner.

Do I need a medical referral to be seen at Southwest Pain Center?

Yes, all patients must have a medical referral from a licensed provider before their first appointment. All new patients referred by a licensed provider must be seen in clinic. Southwest Pain Center does not accept self-referrals or walk-ins.

What should I do if I don't have a primary care provider?

Contact your health insurance company if you don't have a primary healthcare provider.

Do you only prescribe medication?

Contrary to popular belief, we treat pain with a multifaceted approach. Treatment options that may be utilized aside from or in conjunction with medication include physical therapy, acupuncture, electro-stimulation, nerve blocks, steroid injections, and biofeedback.

I have heard about "pill mills." Are you one of them?

Southwest Pain Center is dedicated to accurately diagnosing and treating pain symptoms using advanced imaging techniques such as MRI, CT, and X-rays. Opioid medication is prescribed responsibly and in strict accordance with the CDC Guidelines. 100% of our patients are referred by their PCP, Specialist, Veterans Affairs (VA), and insurance to take over the management of their existing medications and to include advanced interventional pain management procedures when necessary. We customize medications to meet the CDC Guidelines, ensuring your safety. In some cases, this may mean safely decreasing total medication intake according to the CDC Guidelines.

As a new patient, will I be prescribed the same medication I am currently taking?

Not necessarily. A skilled provider will perform a thorough history assessment and evaluation to determine the most appropriate course of treatment. We tailor each treatment plan to fit the patient, which may or may not include current medications.

Besides medication, what else might help me?

Treatment options that may be utilized aside from or in conjunction with medication include physical therapy, acupuncture, nerve blocks, steroid injections, and biofeedback.

Will I need someone with me during my procedure?

Yes, It is recommended that a patient does not drive for at least 24 hours after a interventional procedure.

If I come from out of the city, will I have to come back to SWPC for a follow-up visit?

With all of our patients, both local and out of the city, we do our best to accommodate particular circumstances. However, any patient being prescribed controlled substances must be seen at the clinic or Telehealth at least once a month. New Mexico is a rural community with difficult-to-find specialists offering advanced procedures and chronic pain management care. Speak to your PCP and discuss your best long-term healthcare options. All new patients must be seen in clinic face to face with one of our SWPC licensed medical provider.

Does Southwest Pain Center accept Medicaid and VA patients?

Yes, SWPC does participate in the Medicaid and Veteran Affairs programs.

What should I do if I'm in severe pain & believe I'm experiencing a life-threatening medical crisis?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
